Where to stay

Gay-friendly stays for the Blackpool Illuminations

The lights run into early November, so autumn is a lovely time for a Blackpool break; here are the stays to pick and the dates.

The Blackpool Illuminations turn the seafront into a long, glowing night out, and autumn weekends in a gay guest house are a classic. They are busy, so book early.

When are the Illuminations?

Expect the lights from early autumn into the first days of November. The 2026 switch-on happened on 4 September; the main display ended on 1 November, then a shorter run billed as Christmas by the Sea through 3 January 2027. Dates for later years are not in our data, so check the official Blackpool listings.

Which stays suit an Illuminations break?

How do I see the lights from my hotel?

North Pier is 6 to 11 minutes on foot from the listed stays and the Tower 11 to 17. The Promenade tram line carries you along the front. Trams run up Talbot Road to Blackpool North; confirm times with Blackpool Transport.

What is on in the evening?

Do rooms cost less than at Pride?

Our season notes call September and October the point for lights at lower prices, but weekends are still busy. Midweek in October is a calmer way to see the display: see quiet midweek breaks.

For a ready-made itinerary, use the 48-hour plan and swap the afternoon for a ride along the lights.

Building an Illuminations evening

A simple pattern works well: an early meal, a stroll or tram along the Promenade as the lights come on, then a show or a bar. Funny Girls doors open at 7pm on show nights, and Garlands offers free drag from mid-afternoon, so you can fit a pint and a performance either side of the lights.

Wrap up

Autumn weather varies, so pack layers. If you are travelling from further afield, our travel guide explains trains, trams and parking. The shorter Christmas by the Sea stretch continues until 3 January 2027 according to our data.

The Illuminations also overlap Halloween, when themed drag shows appear across the quarter. See what's on for specifics.

Which night should I choose?

Weekends are busiest, but our notes suggest autumn is cheaper than Pride. Pick a Wednesday to Sunday when Funny Girls is on if you want a show, or Monday and Tuesday for a quieter pace.

Policies, prices and facilities can change, so confirm details with the property before you book.
